Cord tissue also contains some remarkable stem cells. They are called mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells hold out the most promising possibilities for treatments in regenerative medicine. All of us here hope that, when our children have grown up, these stem cells will be routinely used to treat numerous diseases that today are not addressed by current therapies.

  • There are currently more than 300 clinical trials underway focusing on possible treatments for life-altering diseases.
  • These cells are being considered for applications such as reconstituting bone or cartilage, repairing heart tissue after a heart attack, repairing the vascular system, repairing skin, nerve tissue or liver tissue.

How does it work?

The process is quick and painless, and very straightforward.

Collecting the cord tissue is a simple process; a portion of the cord about 15 cm or six inches long is taken and placed in conservation. The stability of these mesenchymal stem cells means that they can be used for treatment and ultra-deep-frozen at any time in the four days following birth.

Placenta conservation

To date, the number of clinical trials worldwide involving placenta and amniotic membrane tend to prove that the conservation of these cells would be too redundant with those of the tissue and cord.(multipotent cells of the same mesodermal origin, known as mesenchymal stem cells – MSCs)

For this reason we prefer not to offer a service for the collection and conservation of placentas. Furthermore, collecting pieces of placenta, sampling of amniotic fluid and stem cell treatment must all be done within a very short time – less than 24 hours. The placenta is a highly complex tissue, histologically fragile, heterogeneous and difficult to classify in terms of cells.

Given the absence to date of proven medical benefits, CordSavings has decided not to offer this service, preferring to remain transparent and ethical vis-à-vis its clients.
